A Letter to Gaia on Earth Day

Dear Gaia,

Happy Earth Day to you. I’ve never written a letter to you before, but today felt like the perfect day to express my deep appreciation for all the lessons you’ve taught me throughout my life.

Some of my earliest memories with you were perched high in a large maple tree in my backyard. I would climb to your highest branches, sit beneath the thick canopy, and watch the light peek through the leaves like sparkly ornaments. I could feel the warmth of the day somehow collected in the bark as I rested on your sturdy limbs. Finding a secure way to lean back, I would lounge in the cool breeze and listen to the rustling of your leaves as the wind whispered by.

Though I didn’t realize it then, we were creating a bond—a relationship that would last forever. Through this bond, you revealed to me the beauty and necessity of nature’s cycles. Over the years, you have shown me that light always follows even the darkest moments of the night. You promised abundant pools of life served at low tide, and just when I thought it would stay like that forever, you gifted me the return of thundering waves to play in. You taught me to see the reflection of my own life in those living, circular journeys.

I love the lessons of simplicity you offer in a gentle breeze, or the contentment found in the bloom of spring flowers. I marvel at the powerful expansiveness you display in a seemingly bare and desolate desert, and the calm steadiness you reveal in a dense forest of trees.

You have demonstrated resilience by creating new growth after what seemed like unrecoverable destruction, and producing new life after moments of utter despair. You’ve promised light after darkness, renewal after devastation, and a path back to center when I felt confused and lost.

Gaia, you have shown me that nothing ever stays the same—and that as soon as something becomes one thing, the cycle continues, and we begin again. You have provided me with an anchor to nature, to you—an anchor that continually brings me back into alignment and grounds me when I feel untethered.

Most importantly, you have taught me the privilege of being alive, of participating in this great network of life where all beings support one another and depend on each other to thrive and flourish.

For these lessons, and countless others still to come, I thank you.

With reverence and love,
Sara Rose
